Forward Deployed Engineer: the take-home

The role: half product manager, half full-stack engineer. You'll work directly with our clients' founders and ship production code with AI coding tools.

The task

Aim for 3 to 4 hours, don't spend more. This is unpaid, so we keep it short.

You're the FDE for LabTrack, a made-up app for dental labs. Labs use it to track cases (crowns, bridges and so on) that clinics send in. The lab's owner sent you this email:

Hi! Few things.

Clinics keep complaining the due date on their case is a day off, mostly the ones in other countries.

Also can clinics get a message when their case is ready? WhatsApp would be ideal but email is fine to start.

And honestly the dashboard just feels cluttered, can you make it better?

We have a demo with a big clinic group on Friday.

What we want back

  1. 1.

    Tickets

    Split Maria's email into tickets, each with acceptance criteria, and list the questions you'd ask her before building anything.

  2. 2.

    Build

    A small Next.js app (any database) with a list of cases. Fix the due-date problem properly, and add a "notify clinic when ready" email (a test mode is fine). Deploy it to Vercel and send us the live URL and a public GitHub repo.

  3. 3.

    Client update

    A short email to Maria, in plain English, covering what you shipped, what you didn't ship and why, and what you need from her.

  4. 4.

    Loom

    A video of 3 minutes or less walking us through the app and one decision you'd make differently.

Note: Using AI tools is expected. Tell us which ones you used and how.
